YouTube Makes Major Reorg to Product Group, Names Christian Oestlien Head of All Subscription Products Including YouTube TV, Music and Premium
YouTube is making a significant reorganization to its product teams, appointing veteran executive Christian Oestlien to lead a newly created group encompassing all of the video giant’s subscription products.
Oestlien, formerly Vice President of Product Management, is now Vice President of YouTube’s Subscriptions Products and reports directly to CEO Neal Mohan. In his new role, he will oversee YouTube TV, YouTube Music, YouTube Premium, as well as podcasts, commerce, and YouTube Primetime Channels.
Previously, Oestlien managed product oversight for YouTube TV, connected TV, sports, and infrastructure. Notably, Adam Smith, who left YouTube last year to join Disney, had been responsible for the Music and Premium product lines as VP of Product Management.
YouTube’s subscriptions business is robust, boasting more than 125 million YouTube Music and Premium customers. Meanwhile, YouTube TV is estimated to have over 10 million subscribers, making it the leading internet pay-TV service in the U.S.
In a statement provided to Variety, Oestlien said, “We have an incredible opportunity across music, podcasts, media, sports, and TV. Bringing these successful businesses together, alongside the ads-supported products that super-serve our users, will enable us to move even faster, learn from each other’s successes, and scale resources. It’s a privilege to lead this team, and I believe that together we can create a unified vision that delivers even more value to our users and partners.”
Alongside this change, Johanna Voolich, formerly YouTube’s Chief Product Officer, will now lead the newly established Viewer Products group as Vice President, also reporting directly to Mohan. Her team will focus on enhancing the viewer experience, covering the YouTube main app, living room devices, search and discovery, YouTube Kids, learning, infrastructure, and trust and safety.
In addition, YouTube is forming a third distinct product organization named Creator & Community Products, which will also report to CEO Neal Mohan. This group’s mission is to support creators of all sizes, drive content creation through generative AI tools, YouTube Shorts, and YouTube Live, and foster community engagement across the platform.
Currently, YouTube has separate leadership for Creator Products and Emerging Experiences & Community Products. These teams will be merged into a single organization, and the company is actively recruiting a new leader to head the combined group.
This strategic reorganization aims to streamline YouTube’s product development efforts across key areas, strengthening collaboration and accelerating innovation to better serve users, creators, and partners alike.
