Woman’s manslaughter sentence matches birthday of victim after killing him with Porsche in Texas
HOUSTON — A woman was convicted and sentenced for hitting and killing a man who was on a first date in Houston in 2023.
Last Thursday, a jury found Kristina Chambers guilty of manslaughter. Chambers was accused of being drunk and speeding in her Porsche, ultimately hitting Joseph McMullins, who was leaving with a woman from Voodoo Donuts after their first date, according to officials.
The incident occurred at about 2:30 a.m. on Wednesday on Westheimer near Waugh in the Montrose neighborhood. Court records revealed that Chambers’ blood alcohol content was four times the legal limit at the time of the crash.
The sentencing phase took place on Monday, October 27, when 35-year-old Chambers learned how long she would spend in prison. The Harris County District Attorney’s Office confirmed that her full sentence was 11 years and 14 days—the additional 14 days corresponding to the victim’s birthday, November 14.
Surveillance cameras captured the crash, shocking the public and playing a critical role in the trial, according to McMullins’ family attorney.
“It was an overwhelming amount of evidence that Ms. Chambers was drinking, high, being reckless, driving down an urban street,” said Rand Nolen, who is representing the McMullins family in a separate civil case against Chambers.
During the trial, the defense argued that Chambers’ name-brand heels caused the crash, claiming it was an accident. Prosecutors, however, depicted Chambers as a wealthy woman who wanted to show off her new car to friends inside the vehicle at the time. They also highlighted that she had allegedly visited several bars earlier that night.
Chambers faced a sentencing range of two to 20 years behind bars before the jury’s decision.
