In a significant crackdown on luxury car tax evasion, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) and Customs authorities have launched a nationwide operation named “Numkoor,” with Kerala as a primary focus area. This operation targets high-profile individuals, including renowned Malayalam actors Prithviraj Sukumaran and Dulquer Salmaan.

### Nationwide Raids Across Kerala

As part of the operation, raids were conducted at 30 locations spread across Kerala districts such as Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam, Kottayam, Kozhikode, and Malappuram. The searches included the residences of both Sukumaran and Salmaan, as well as prominent luxury car showrooms within the state.

Despite the high-profile nature of these visits, officials did not find any suspicious vehicles at the actors’ homes.

### The Modus Operandi

The operation focuses on cracking down on the illegal practice of registering luxury vehicles in Himachal Pradesh and then transporting them to other states, mainly Kerala. In many cases, the vehicles’ registration numbers are altered to conceal their true origin.

This tactic helps evade taxes and avoid compliance with proper registration procedures, which is a growing concern within the luxury automobile sector due to the high market value involved.

Customs officials are working closely with the Motor Vehicles Department to inspect these vehicles, their documentation, and transportation routes as part of a thorough multi-phase crackdown.

### Ongoing Investigation and Cooperation

Both Dulquer Salmaan and Prithviraj Sukumaran are reportedly cooperating fully with the authorities during the investigation.

Officials have emphasized that the inclusion of celebrity residences is purely procedural and part of a wider nationwide effort to protect government revenue and enforce tax laws equitably.

The operation will continue in multiple phases, ensuring a comprehensive review of documentation and regulatory compliance within the luxury car market.
