In a significant crackdown on luxury car tax evasion, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) and Customs have launched a nationwide operation dubbed “Numkoor,” with Kerala as a key focus area. This operation targets high-profile individuals, including renowned Malayalam actors Prithviraj Sukumaran and Dulquer Salmaan.

### Details of the Operation

Raids were conducted at 30 locations across districts such as Thiruvananthapuram, Ernakulam, Kottayam, Kozhikode, and Malappuram. These included the residences of both actors as well as prominent car showrooms throughout the state.

Despite the extensive searches, officials reportedly did not find any suspicious vehicles at the actors’ homes.

### Focus on Registration and Smuggling Patterns

The operation is being carried out by Customs officials in coordination with the Motor Vehicles Department. Authorities are scrutinizing high-end cars that are registered in Himachal Pradesh but are used in other states, particularly Kerala.

The modus operandi being investigated involves registering luxury vehicles in Himachal Pradesh before transporting them across India. In many cases, the registration numbers are altered to conceal the vehicles’ true origin, thereby evading taxes and regulatory scrutiny.

Authorities have confirmed that the crackdown will proceed in multiple phases, with ongoing focus on documentation, registration procedures, and transportation routes.

### Cooperation and Clarifications

The inclusion of celebrity residences in the raids has garnered significant media attention. However, officials emphasize that the operation is strictly procedural and part of a nationwide effort to safeguard government revenue and ensure compliance.

Both Prithviraj Sukumaran and Dulquer Salmaan are reportedly cooperating fully with the investigation.

Given the high market value of luxury automobiles, this sector remains particularly susceptible to tax evasion and fraudulent practices, necessitating thorough and rigorous inspections.
