Just hours before the Election Commission of India announced the poll schedule for Bihar, the Patna Metro was officially launched. Chief Minister Nitish Kumar inaugurated the first operational stretch—a 4.3-km priority corridor between Bhutnath Road and New ISBT. This initial segment includes three stations: ISBT, Zero Mile, and Bhutnath Road. The corridor will open to the public starting October 7.

### Operational Features

The Patna Metro will operate daily from 8:00 AM to 10:00 PM. Trains are scheduled to run at 20-minute intervals, initially reaching a maximum speed of 40 km/h, with approximately 40 to 42 trips per day.

Fare pricing is affordable, ranging from ₹15 for travel between ISBT and Zero Mile, up to ₹30 for the New ISBT to Bhutnath Road route. Each coach can carry up to 945 standing passengers and offers 138 seats. Additionally, 12 seats in every coach are reserved for women and persons with disabilities.

### Safety and Aesthetic Features

The metro coaches are adorned with traditional Madhubani paintings and stickers showcasing Bihar’s iconic landmarks, celebrating local culture. For passenger security, every coach is equipped with 360-degree CCTV cameras, emergency buttons, and microphones that allow direct communication with train operators during emergencies.

Further enhancing safety, personnel from the Bihar Special Armed Police (BSAP) will be deployed across all metro premises.

The inaugural train set was flagged off on Monday and includes new coaches manufactured by Alstom in Vadodara, Gujarat.

### Expansion Plans and Future Development

Alongside the launch, CM Nitish Kumar laid the foundation stone for a 9.35-km underground metro corridor under Corridor-1. This underground stretch will span six stations, connecting Patna Junction to Rukanpura and Mithapur. The estimated cost for this phase is ₹2,565.8 crore.

The overall Patna Metro project carries an estimated budget of ₹13,925.5 crore, receiving financial support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA), the Government of India, and the Government of Bihar.

### Project Overview and Timeline

Patna Metro will encompass a total length of 31.42 km, divided into two corridors: the 16.86-km Red Line and the 14.56-km Blue Line, featuring 24 stations in total.

Full-scale operations across all planned phases are expected to begin by 2027.

To expedite services, Patna Metro has leased a three-coach train set from Pune Metro for three years at a cost of ₹21.15 crore, a decision approved on July 15.

The inauguration of this metro marks a significant milestone in modernizing Patna’s urban transportation and promises enhanced connectivity and convenience for the city’s residents in the years ahead.
