Trump sued over botched rollout of steep new fee — with no way to pay

President Donald Trump’s “Big, Beautiful Bill” has encountered an unexpected obstacle that has sparked a lawsuit. The legislation, signed earlier this year, includes significant cuts—over $1 trillion—to Medicaid and food assistance programs. It also phases out renewable energy and electric vehicle credits while extending large tax cuts that primarily benefit wealthy voters.

One of the less-discussed provisions of this bill is the imposition of a $100 annual fee on asylum seekers in the United States. However, according to Politico, this fee was introduced in such an unclear manner that there is currently no established way for asylum seekers to make these payments, prompting legal action against the administration.

“The fees, which are new, were part of the GOP’s domestic policy and tax law President Donald Trump signed on July 4,” the report explains. “But the administration’s rollout has been plagued by mishaps: The two agencies responsible for collecting the fees initially released conflicting instructions, and only one has provided a method to pay the annual fee.”

Further complicating the issue, payment notices to asylum seekers have been inconsistent, and misinformation has spread widely on social media. Many asylum seekers fear that their inability to pay the fee could be used as grounds to remove them from the country altogether.

Some asylum seekers who have attempted to pay the $100 fee to immigration courts are confused about whether they have followed the correct procedure or if the government will require them to pay again.

“This just feels like people are being cornered from every angle, and the lack of clarity just causes that much more fear and intimidation,” said Boston-area immigration lawyer Robin Nice to Politico. “It’s hard to know if it’s weaponized incompetence in how they’re rolling it out, or if it’s straight up malicious. But it’s really hard to advise clients.”

Aaron Reichlin-Melnick, a fellow at the American Immigration Council and a frequent critic of the Trump administration’s immigration policies, expressed strong disapproval of these developments.

This unclear and confusing implementation of the asylum seeker fee has not only raised legal challenges but also intensified fears within vulnerable communities, highlighting the urgent need for clarity and fairness in immigration policies.
