The young player who’s ‘not dissing’ Nuggets after contract extension failure

The Denver Nuggets have gotten off to a mixed start in the 2025 NBA season, currently holding a 1-1 record.

In their season opener on the road against the Golden State Warriors, Denver squandered a spectacular 50-point performance from Aaron Gordon, ultimately falling short. However, the team bounced back with a comfortable home victory over the Phoenix Suns on Saturday.

One player seeing limited minutes early on is wing Peyton Watson, now in his fourth year in the NBA. Watson and the Nuggets were unable to come to an agreement on a contract extension this summer, opening the door for him to become a free agent next year. Despite this, the young defensive wing isn’t taking the situation personally.

“From what I understand, it was just a financial business decision for the Nuggets,” Watson said. “As a business, you’ve gotta operate based on what’s best for your business. And when it comes time for me to make my decision next summer, I’ve gotta operate as a business myself.”

He added, “That’s no diss to the Nuggets. That’s no diss to the Kroenkes. They’ve showed me a lot of love, a lot of hospitality, and they’ve done a lot for me. They gave me a chance in this league, to prove that I’m going to be here for a while. So I think everything will work itself out.”

Watson is an intriguing young piece for the Nuggets. He showcased his defensive versatility early in his career while mostly coming off the bench as the team powered its way to the 2023 NBA championship during his rookie season.

Although his usage has increased since then, many Nuggets fans had hoped to see more offensive development from Watson by this stage of his career. With the new wings Denver added during free agency, it’s unlikely he’ll receive significant playing time this season.

The Nuggets will look to build momentum when they take the floor on Monday evening for a road game against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
