The Frasier Character You Likely Didn’t Realize Stephen King Played

Stephen King is one of the most successful writers of all time, with hundreds of millions of books sold and dozens of titles to his credit since his 1974 debut novel *Carrie.* Two years after its publication, *Carrie* became a hit movie starring Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie, directed by Brian DePalma. This adaptation marked the first time King saw his work brought to the screen.

King would later pen scripts for several of his book-to-film adaptations, though almost all of his versions—except the 1989 *Pet Sematary*—went unused. Beyond writing, King has accumulated more than two dozen acting credits, including quick cameos in films like *Pet Sematary* and *Maximum Overdrive,* as well as TV miniseries adaptations of *The Stand* and *The Shining.*

In addition to live-action roles, King made two voice appearances as himself on *The Simpsons.* Interestingly, he silently declined an offer to appear in the Season 34 *Treehouse of Horror* special.

Sharp-eared fans of *Frasier*, the hit *Cheers* spin-off that ran for 11 seasons, might have also noticed another brief voice acting cameo by King. In Season 8, Episode 8, titled “Mary Christmas,” Dr. Frasier Crane (played by Kelsey Grammer) takes two phone calls before a news break. Both callers ask to be heard after the break for the doctor’s full attention. The first caller, a man named Tom, was voiced by celebrity chef Wolfgang Puck. The next caller, identified as Brian and calling in via car phone, speaks just a few words. That was Stephen King lending a grumpy impatience to his quick line read.

Although King’s *Frasier* appearance didn’t make the show’s list of most secret and surprising call-in cameos, it may have helped put him back on the radar of casting directors. More than half of King’s 31 IMDb acting credits came after that brief role. These include an appearance on *Sons of Anarchy* and several additional voice gigs, such as playing himself in a 2021 episode of *Duncanville.*

King’s cameo on the canceled show *Duncanville* remains his most recent acting credit. Despite his age—78 years old—he continues to maintain a rigorous writing routine. His latest novel, *Never Flinch*, was released in May 2025.

Meanwhile, interest in King’s stories continues to grow. *The Long Walk* became available for streaming as of October 21, and Edgar Wright’s full-action adaptation of *The Running Man* is forthcoming.

Reflecting on his *Sons of Anarchy* experience in a post on his website, King expressed excitement about working with the accomplished cast and getting to ride a Harley-Davidson motorcycle.

“I was particularly pleased to meet Charlie Hunnam (Jax) and Ron Perlman,” King wrote. “I got signed *Hellboy* photos for my three grandsons; pretty nice. I also got to act with Katey Sagal, who plays Gemma, the scary matriarch of the Sons clan, and Kim Coates, who plays Tig. They treated me like a professional, which I most assuredly am not.”

While King’s filmography might suggest otherwise, none of his acting performances have been nominated for Emmys or Oscars. However, he does hold two Primetime Emmy nominations for writing the miniseries adaptations of *The Shining* and *The Stand.*

Fans of King’s work always enjoy spotting his live-action and voice appearances, proving that his influence extends far beyond the written page—even if award committees have yet to fully recognize his on-screen talents.
