**Stephen Colbert Was Genuinely Shocked That Trump Is Actually Going “Hulk Smash” On This American Institution, And It’s So Grim**

On Tuesday, *The Late Show* host Stephen Colbert opened his monologue with some backhanded praise for President Donald Trump.

“You think it would be impossible for us to be shocked by Donald Trump,” Colbert said. But the new shock, he explained, is Trump’s plans to demolish the White House East Wing to make way for a giant ballroom that will dwarf the main residence.

“We’re just nine months into Trump’s term, and he’s going ‘Hulk smash’ on the White House,” Colbert remarked. “Last time, it took him at least four years to bring a demo crew to the Capitol.”

He then played footage from the January 6, 2021 assault on the U.S. Capitol carried out by Trump supporters, drawing a dark parallel to the current situation.

“Yesterday at the White House, Trump talked about his wrecking ballroom,” Colbert noted. “And the one thing I don’t think we make enough fun of is how his brain is filled with cotton-candy fantasies of lavish princely soirees.”

Rolling footage of Trump speaking at an event honoring two college baseball teams, Colbert highlighted the president’s extravagant description of the new ballroom.

“So you’ll have drinks, cocktails, everything on this floor, and then they’ll say, ‘Welcome to dinner.’ You walk into the ballroom, ‘Mr. Senators,’ and you’re gonna see a ballroom the likes of which, I don’t think it will be topped,” Trump said.

Colbert mocked the concept as Trump’s “Barbie dream ballroom” and criticized the president for fantasizing about his parties amid a government shutdown.
