Steelers will be without injured safeties Elliott, Peppers and Clark as Indianapolis visits
PITTSBURGH (AP) — The Pittsburgh Steelers secondary is facing significant challenges ahead of their upcoming game against the Indianapolis Colts on Sunday.
The Steelers placed starting safety DeShon Elliott on injured reserve on Friday due to a knee injury. Elliott had left last Sunday’s loss to Green Bay after injuring his right knee in the third quarter.
Adding to their troubles, the team ruled out backups Jabrill Peppers (quadriceps) and Chuck Clark (illness). This leaves Pittsburgh’s NFL-worst pass defense in a difficult position as they prepare to face the league’s top-ranked offense.
Given the absences, there is a strong likelihood the Steelers will activate veteran safety Kyle Dugger just three days after acquiring him from New England.
The team will also be without wide receiver Scotty Miller (finger) and cornerback Cory Trice (hamstring/knee). Trice was eligible to come off injured reserve this week but remains sidelined.
In addition, Pittsburgh placed backup defensive lineman Daniel Ekuale (knee) on injured reserve on Friday.
The Steelers now face the challenge of adjusting their lineup as they prepare to take on the Colts this Sunday.
