Square Enix confirms layoffs & studio closures as it restructures its Western business
Square Enix has confirmed incoming layoffs and closures as it prepares to once again restructure its US and other Western businesses.
Rumors about layoffs in Western offices had been circulating for some time, but the company recently confirmed these plans through a financial presentation. This presentation, posted on Square Enix’s investor relations website, details the decision to reduce its presence overseas and re-prioritize resources back to its core business in Japan.
Western operations for Square Enix have been on the decline for several years. In 2022, the company sold off many of its Western studios, including Crystal Dynamics, Eidos, and Square Enix Montreal. Additionally, Square Enix has had to adjust its development strategy before, shifting from exclusive titles to multiplatform releases following slower-than-expected early sales of *Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth*.
This latest restructuring highlights Square Enix’s focus on consolidating its efforts in Japan while scaling back in Western markets.
