No school had ever swept the boys and girls Southern Section Open Division basketball championships in the same season—until Sierra Canyon pulled it off on Saturday night. Both teams earned No. 1 seeds for the Southern California regional playoffs, which begin on Tuesday and lead up to the state championships scheduled for March 13-14 at the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento.

To secure a trip to Sacramento, both Sierra Canyon teams will have to defend their home court in Chatsworth, as they face tough competition in the regional rounds.

The Sierra Canyon boys’ team received a first-round bye in the six-team tournament. They will host the winner of Wednesday’s matchup between Santa Margarita and Redondo Union on Saturday. Harvard-Westlake holds the No. 2 seed and will play host to the winner of Sherman Oaks Notre Dame versus Santa Maria St. Joseph.

On the girls’ side, the Open Division tournament features only four teams. Top-seeded Sierra Canyon will host Sage Hill in a boys-girls doubleheader on Saturday. Meanwhile, No. 2 seed Ontario Christian will play host to Etiwanda.

In Division 1 boys, La Mirada finally earns a state playoff home game after entering the Southern Section Open Division as the No. 12 seed and making it to the semifinals. The Matadores are now the No. 1 seed in a competitive 16-team field and will host Mater Dei on Tuesday.

Other top seeds in Division 1 boys include Corona Centennial at No. 2, Crespi at No. 3, and St. John Bosco at No. 4. The regional finals are scheduled for March 10.

Stay tuned as these teams battle for regional supremacy on their path to the state championships.
