Scarborough girls soccer tops Kennebunk in 2OT to reach A South final
SCARBOROUGH — Abby Roberts had been unable to get control of the ball at her feet when she had her first golden opportunity to put Scarborough High’s girls soccer team on the board.
Deep in the second overtime, Roberts scored the winning goal — and she didn’t use her feet. Roberts got herself deep in the box, and when the ball bounced free about a yard from the end line, she just ran through it, pushing it in with her upper body to lift the Red Storm to a 1-0 win over Kennebunk in a Class A South semifinal on Saturday.
It was the second double-overtime playoff win for No. 1 Scarborough (15-1), which had beaten No. 9 Marshwood, 3-2, in the quarterfinal.
“Always put your body on it no matter what. So it went kind of off my chest, face. Couldn’t be happier,” Roberts said.
Scarborough will look to defend its regional title on Tuesday at Falmouth High against the winner of Saturday’s late game between No. 2 Falmouth and No. 3 Windham.
No. 4 Kennebunk (12-3-1) suffered its second 1-0 loss this season to Scarborough. The Rams had advanced with a penalty-kick win against Gorham but rarely generated offense against Scarborough.
Scarborough finished with a dominant 26-3 shot advantage. Kennebunk goalie Teagan Hanson made 12 saves.
“Scarborough deserved to win the game, no question,” said Kennebunk first-year coach Josh Viola. “They had more shots on goal. They had more pressure. We were hoping to get a goal or get ourselves to PKs.”
Scarborough controlled play throughout the 80 minutes of regulation but had nothing to show for it other than a 17-2 shot edge. A Josie Duncan direct kick that clanged off the crossbar early in the match was the closest Scarborough came to scoring.
A rush by hardworking midfielder Maggie Booth led to a crossing pass that found Roberts with an open net, but she was unable to collect the ball. The close-but-not-quite trend continued into the first overtime. Duncan again hit the crossbar on a direct kick, and Scarborough held a 6-0 shot advantage in the extra period.
Scarborough’s dominance was built in the midfield, where Booth and Maya Taylor patrolled the middle, repeatedly feeding a rotating cast of forwards including Roberts, Paige Garlock, Molly Igneri, and Jill Morris.
Despite the one-sided play, Kennebunk’s strong defensive back line — Ayla Plamondon, Camdyn Keenan, Adelyn Pitchforth, and Payton Wilson — with constant support from senior Kendall Therrien in midfield, repelled the threats effectively.
“We had been able to get into the box but the second player to get to the ball, we didn’t quite get there,” said first-year Scarborough coach Craig Roberts. “We had a lot of shots but didn’t quite get that last player to the ball until Abby did.”
