Rockland County, five towns urge monetary donations to food pantries

**Rockland County Calls for Donations to Support Local Food Pantries Amid Federal SNAP Benefit Lapse**
*New City, NY* — In response to the ongoing federal government shutdown, which is expected to cause a lapse in Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits on November 1, the County of Rockland government, along with the towns of Clarkstown, Haverstraw, Orangetown, Ramapo, and Stony Point, is urging residents to make monetary donations to local food pantries.
Approximately 19,000 households in Rockland rely on SNAP benefits, including 54,562 children and adults. With the anticipated lapse in benefits, local pantries are preparing for a significant increase in demand.
All contributions—both monetary and food donations—will be directed to Rockland Community Against Hunger, an organization representing over 40 food pantries across the county.
According to the Regional Food Bank, every $1 donated to a local pantry allows them to purchase $8 to $10 worth of food (equivalent to 4 meals) due to their access to donated and discounted food supplies.
“County residents and community-minded businesses are encouraged to join us in assisting our neighbors,” the County government said in a statement released on October 30. “Food pantry purchasing power can be significantly stronger than retail purchasing power, making monetary donations extremely critical at this time.”

The Rockland Community Against Hunger steering committee will oversee the distribution of donations throughout Rockland, ensuring allocation based on community need and impact.
As food pantries and nonprofit organizations anticipate a sharp rise in families seeking assistance, volunteers will be essential to help sort food donations, prepare packages, assist with distribution, transport goods, and more.

In addition to monetary donations, the County of Rockland is launching a Countywide Food Drive in partnership with the five towns to support SNAP recipients and others facing food insecurity this season.
