Qualcomm (QCOM) announces new AI chips, competing directly with AMD & NVIDIA

This week, Qualcomm made a major announcement unveiling its upcoming AI products designed to compete more directly with industry leaders like AMD, NVIDIA, and other AI-focused technology companies. The new AI200 and AI250 accelerator chips and racks aim to deliver a significant boost in computing power on Qualcomm’s hardware platform.

According to Qualcomm’s recent press release, the AI200 and AI250 represent a new scale of AI computing capability within the company’s technology lineup. The AI200 chip is set to be the first offering in this new era, with availability expected in 2026. Following that, the AI250 will build upon the AI200’s advancements, delivering a substantial leap in compute capacity and energy efficiency, targeted for release in 2027.

Qualcomm is best known for its mobile chips and system-on-chips (SoCs) that power a wide array of small electronic devices, including smartphones, VR headsets, and laptop PCs. Notably, its chips have been integrated into hardware such as the Meta Quest 3. Beyond mobile devices, Qualcomm is also expanding its footprint in other sectors, exemplified by its partnership with BMW to develop an advanced automated driving system.
