The National Stock Exchange (NSE) has announced a special *Muhurat Trading* session on the occasion of Diwali. This year, the event will take place on October 21, from 1:45 PM to 2:45 PM. Notably, the pre-opening session will be held earlier than usual, from 1:30 PM to 1:45 PM, instead of the typical evening timing.

### Tradition and Significance of Muhurat Trading

Muhurat Trading marks the beginning of a new Samvat, or Hindu calendar year. It is widely believed that trading during this auspicious hour brings prosperity and financial growth to investors and stakeholders. This special session covers multiple market segments, including equity, commodity derivatives, currency derivatives, equity futures & options, and securities lending & borrowing (SLB).

### Stock Market Closure on Diwali

The stock market remains closed for regular trading on Diwali, with the Muhurat Trading session being the sole exception. All trades executed during this one-hour period are binding and lead to settlement obligations. Despite its short duration, Muhurat Trading is conducted with full formality and is recorded just like any other trading day.

Many investors consider it auspicious to invest during this time, with some buying shares for long-term holding or as part of family traditions.

### Market Trends and Historical Performance

Historically, Muhurat Trading sessions have often ended on a positive note, even though trading volumes tend to be relatively low. Over the past 16 years, market indices have closed in the green in 13 sessions, reflecting the generally favorable trend associated with this event.

Last year’s Muhurat Trading session was especially encouraging, with the Sensex closing up by 335 points (0.42%) at 79,724, and the Nifty gaining 99 points (0.41%) to end at 24,304.
