Georgia Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) has introduced a bill aimed at eliminating the H-1B visa program, calling it a necessary step to “END the mass replacement of American workers.”

Greene announced the bill on Thursday, which, if passed, would completely abolish the H-1B visa program, with one exception: allowing 10,000 annual visas strictly for medical professionals. However, this provision would be phased out over a period of 10 years.

The congresswoman’s proposal also seeks to eliminate the pathway to citizenship for H-1B visa holders, requiring them to return to their home countries once their visas expire. Greene emphasized that this move would “restore the original intent of the visa: for it to be temporary.”

In an announcement posted to X (formerly Twitter), Greene stated:
“I am introducing a bill to END the mass replacement of American workers by aggressively phasing out the H-1B program. Big Tech, AI giants, hospitals, and industries across the board have abused the H-1B system to cut out our own people.”

She continued, “Americans are the most talented people in the world, and I have full faith in the American people. I serve Americans only, and I will ALWAYS put Americans first. My bill ELIMINATES the corrupt H-1B program and puts AMERICANS FIRST again in tech, healthcare, engineering, manufacturing, and every industry that keeps this country running.”

Greene added, “If we want the next generation to have the American Dream, we must stop replacing them and start investing in them.”

Her bill comes amid ongoing debates within the Republican Party and, in particular, the MAGA base about the future of the H-1B program. Recently, President Donald Trump defended the visa program during an interview on Fox News with Laura Ingraham.

During the Tuesday night interview, Trump argued that the U.S. does not have enough workers with “certain talents” to fill specialized roles, which he said justifies the need for the H-1B visa program.

Ingraham pushed back, asserting the program causes Americans to lose out on available jobs. Trump responded:
“Well, I agree, but you also do have to bring in talent.”

When Ingraham insisted, “Well, we have plenty of talented people here,” Trump replied, “No, you don’t. No, you don’t have certain talents, and people have to learn.”

He explained that companies cannot simply hire unqualified workers from unemployment lines to fill complex positions in STEM fields and advanced manufacturing. Instead, he emphasized the importance of bringing in “talented people” from abroad to meet these technical demands.

Supporters of Trump’s position say his comments align with his administration’s approach to managing the H-1B program — imposing higher visa fees while still allowing essential specialized expertise to enter the country.

However, critics challenge the narrative of widespread talent shortages. They argue that employers exploit the H-1B program primarily to access cheaper labor rather than because of a lack of qualified American workers.

Following these developments, White House spokesperson Taylor Rogers issued a statement Friday clarifying the administration’s stance. Rogers highlighted that President Trump has “done more than any president in modern history to tighten our immigration laws and put American workers first.”

“The Trump administration is protecting American workers by restoring accountability in the H-1B process and ensuring that it is used to bring in only the highest-skilled foreign workers in specialty occupations—not low wage workers that will displace Americans,” Rogers added.
