MP Cough Syrup Case: Two More Syrups Fail Quality Test After Coldriff, Banned

**Bhopal (Madhya Pradesh): Authorities Ban Two More Syrups Following Coldriff Controversy**
In the wake of the Coldriff syrup controversy, which tragically claimed the lives of at least 16 children in Chhindwara and Betul, authorities have stepped up inspections of other syrups available in the market. Random tests conducted on various syrups revealed that two more products failed quality checks and were immediately banned for being of Non Standard Quality (NSQ).
The first syrup identified is Ambroxol HCL, Guaiphenesine Terbutaline Sulphate and Menthol Syrup (Batch LSL25160, Manufactured January 2025, Expires December 2026). This product is manufactured by Shape Pharma Pvt Ltd, Surendranagar, Rajkot, Gujarat. Laboratory analysis found it contains 0.616% diethylene glycol (DEG), a toxic substance.
The second banned syrup is Bromohexin Hydrochloride Terbutaline Sulphate, Guaiphenesine and Menthol Syrup (Batch RO1GL2523, Manufactured January 1, 2025), produced by Rednonex Pharmaceuticals Pvt Ltd, Bavla, Ahmedabad. This syrup was found to contain 1.342% DEG.
Health authorities have already begun seizing stocks of both syrups to prevent further distribution. It was reported that one of the companies had around 100 bottles stored in Indore. The Gujarat Drug Controller has been notified about these findings and the ban.
**Background on Coldriff Syrup Incident**
Officials stated that the toxic Coldriff syrup had been in circulation for 10 to 15 years and has now been identified as the cause behind the recent spate of children’s deaths. The syrup’s composition is dangerously toxic, and it was never meant to be prescribed for children under four years of age. However, doctor Praveen Soni reportedly prescribed it to children in this vulnerable age group.
The authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and urge healthcare providers and the public to exercise caution in the use of syrups for children.
