Michael Irvin torches Matt Eberflus and Cowboys after pathetic defensive outing vs. Broncos
Dallas Cowboys’ defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus came under scrutiny following the team’s 44-24 loss to the Denver Broncos at Empower Field at Mile High in Denver during Week 8 of the 2025 NFL season. This defeat marked the Cowboys’ fourth loss of the year, dealing a significant blow to their playoff aspirations.
While Dallas’ defense struggled throughout the game, NFL legend Michael Irvin didn’t hold back in his criticism. “This CAN NOT be an @NFL defense that’s wearing the @dallascowboys helmets !!!!!!” Irvin tweeted on Sunday, capturing the frustration of fans and analysts alike.
The Cowboys allowed 426 total yards of offense in the loss. Prior to this game, Dallas’ defense had been conceding just over 400 yards per game on average. However, the Broncos made the most of their opportunities against the Cowboys’ vulnerable backline.
Denver quarterback Bo Nix completed 19 of 29 passes for 247 yards and four touchdowns, alongside one interception. Broncos running back RJ Harvey rushed for 46 yards and two scores on seven carries, while J.K. Dobbins added 111 yards on 15 rush attempts.
On the offensive side for Dallas, quarterback Dak Prescott also faced difficulties. He finished the game completing 19 of 38 passes for 188 yards and two interceptions, hindering the Cowboys’ comeback efforts.
Looking ahead, Matt Eberflus’ Cowboys will take on the Arizona Cardinals in Week 9 of the 2025 NFL season. The game is scheduled for Monday night, November 3, with kickoff at 8:15 p.m. ET at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Dallas.
The Cardinals (2-5) started the season strong, winning their first two games, but have since struggled with a five-game losing streak. The Cowboys will be eager to bounce back and secure a win, especially given the limited margin for error remaining in their playoff pursuit.
Eberflus and his coaching staff will need to focus on tightening up the defense and addressing the breakdowns seen against Denver if Dallas hopes to stay competitive in the coming weeks.
