Man Shot and Killed by LAPD After Swinging Metal Chain at People and Drivers in South Los Angeles
SOUTH LOS ANGELES (KABC) — Los Angeles police shot and killed a man who was reportedly swinging a metal chain at people and drivers in South Los Angeles.
Officers responded to an assault with a deadly weapon call around noon near Kalmia Street and 103rd Street. Multiple callers reported that a man was armed with a metal chain and was swinging it at pedestrians and passing vehicles, according to the LAPD.
When officers arrived, they encountered the man armed with the chain and gave him commands to surrender, which he reportedly ignored. The LAPD said they used 40mm less-lethal rounds in an attempt to take the suspect into custody, but these attempts had no effect.
Officers opened fire after the man continued to advance toward them. The man was rushed to the hospital, where he was later pronounced dead, police said.
The metal chain was collected as evidence. No officers or bystanders were injured during the incident.
