Jaxon Smith-Njigba makes Seahawks history in monster game vs. Texans

The Seattle Seahawks are showing real promise in Mike Macdonald’s second season as defensive coordinator. After a strong 27-19 victory over the Houston Texans on Monday Night Football, Seattle improved their record to 5-2.
Seattle performed well on both offense and defense, but one offensive player stood out with a record-breaking performance. Seahawks receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba had a monster game against the Texans, logging eight receptions for 123 yards and a touchdown.
This impressive outing marked Smith-Njigba’s third consecutive game with over 100 receiving yards and a touchdown, breaking a tie for the longest such streak in franchise history, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. The third-year receiver is clearly blossoming and solidifying his role as the team’s alpha wide receiver.
Through seven games, Smith-Njigba leads the NFL in receiving yards with 819, holding a significant lead as no other receiver has surpassed 700 yards. Additionally, he accounts for 46% of Seattle’s total receiving yards this season—the highest rate in the league. The Seahawks are fortunate to have such a dynamic wideout to build their offense around.
It will be fascinating to see if Smith-Njigba can maintain his spot atop the NFL receiving yards leaderboard throughout the rest of the season.
### Seahawks Teammates Praise Jaxon Smith-Njigba’s Monster Game
Smith-Njigba’s peers were quick to praise his incredible effort in Monday’s win over Houston. Veteran wide receiver Cooper Kupp highlighted how challenging it is to start a season the way Smith-Njigba has.
“There’s nothing routine about what he’s been able to do productivity-wise,” Kupp said. “It’s very difficult. That takes a lot of work to be able to do that. I think that’s the standard.”
Smith-Njigba has clearly become a security blanket for quarterback Sam Darnold, who targeted him 14 times during the game. Seattle’s next closest receiver had only five targets.
### Seahawks Prepare for Bye Week
After their big primetime win, the Seahawks will enjoy some much-needed rest during their upcoming bye week. Defensive tackle Leonard Williams emphasized the timely nature of the bye.
“I think we got our bye at the perfect time,” Williams said. “It’s almost midseason right now. I think we’re going into it feeling good about what we’ve accomplished so far.”
Seattle will return from the bye refreshed and ready for their Week 9 matchup against the Washington Commanders on November 2nd.
