Japanese Teachers Still Work World’s Longest Hours

Elementary and junior high school teachers in Japan continue to work the longest hours compared to their peers worldwide, according to a recent OECD report released on Tuesday.

The 2024 findings by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development revealed that, although working hours for Japanese teachers have decreased by about four hours per week since the previous survey in 2018, they still significantly exceed those of teachers in other countries.

This ongoing challenge highlights the demanding workload faced by educators in Japan, despite efforts to improve work-life balance in the teaching profession.
