Japanese publishers issue joint demand to restrict copywritten content in OpenAI Sora 2

A collection of major Japanese publishers has taken a formal stance against the use of their intellectual property (IP) in OpenAI’s Sora 2 AI video generation platform. CODA, Japan’s Content Overseas Distribution Association, has issued a letter to OpenAI demanding that the company restrict the use of copyrighted materials in Sora 2. This includes content from prominent companies such as Sony, Bandai Namco, Square Enix, and several others.

The letter from CODA to OpenAI was announced in a press release on the organization’s website, as reported by Automaton. In addition to the game companies mentioned above, several notable media companies are also included. These include Aniplex, Studio Ghibli, Kadokawa, and Shueisha.

With the request to restrict this collection of publishers’ content, popular franchises such as Dark Souls, Final Fantasy, Dragon Ball, My Hero Academia, and many more would be affected. Studio Ghibli’s distinctive art style, in particular, has been heavily parroted in AI-generated images and videos, although the aesthetic itself may prove more difficult to restrict legally.

The publishers have conducted research on Sora 2 and claim that it infringes upon their IP rights. This development marks the latest copyright challenge faced by Sora 2, which has already drawn denunciations from the Motion Picture Association, the estate of Martin Luther King Jr., and SAG-AFTRA—represented by figures such as Bryan Cranston.

As the landscape around AI-generated content continues to evolve, these ongoing disputes highlight the growing concerns among creators and rights holders regarding the unauthorized use of their work in AI platforms.
