External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has stated that India is actively working to resolve its trade issues with the United States. Addressing the Kautilya Economic Conclave (KEC 2025), he attributed the imposition of tariffs on Indian exports to the inability to reach a common ground on several trade matters.
“We have issues with the United States today, mainly that we haven’t yet reached a landing ground in our trade discussions,” Jaishankar said.
**Tariff Concerns and ‘Red Lines’**
Jaishankar described the tariffs imposed on India as “unfair,” highlighting that New Delhi is negotiating against tariffs of up to 50% on Indian goods. He emphasized that India’s “red lines have to be respected” during these negotiations.
Despite the challenges posed by these tariffs, the minister expressed optimism that they would not impact all aspects of trade between the two countries.
**Tariffs Reshaping Global Trade**
The minister also spoke about the broader impact of tariffs on global trade, noting that tariffs are reshaping comparative and competitive advantages worldwide. He explained that as tariffs become a central consideration, countries must reassess their economic strategies.
While some issues require negotiation, Jaishankar assured that most of the India-US relationship remains “business as usual or more.”
**Focus on Free Trade Agreements (FTAs)**
Jaishankar stressed the importance of India focusing on free trade agreements with non-competitive economies. He noted that existing FTAs with Asian economies have been challenging due to their competitiveness and the role of supply chains that benefit China.
India’s challenge, he added, is to build strong manufacturing capabilities and achieve an optimal mix of advanced and traditional manufacturing sectors.

India continues its efforts to foster a balanced and mutually beneficial trade relationship with the US, while strategically expanding its trade agreements with other economies to strengthen its global economic position.
