**India in Trouble Chasing 124 Against South Africa in Kolkata Test**
KOLKATA, India (AP) — Chasing a modest target of 124 runs for victory, India found itself struggling at 10-2 at lunch on day three of the first cricket test against South Africa at Eden Gardens.
The situation worsened for the home side after skipper Shubman Gill, who suffered a neck spasm while batting on day two, was hospitalized later on Saturday evening for observation and care. On Sunday, the BCCI announced that Gill would take no further part in the test. Effectively, India’s score at lunch was 10-3, needing another 114 runs for victory, with Washington Sundar (5 not out) and Dhruv Jurel (4 not out) unbeaten at the crease.
Marco Jansen made early inroads during the brief seven-over session before lunch, dismissing both Indian openers. Yashasvi Jaiswal was caught behind for a four-ball duck, while Lokesh Rahul also fell caught behind after scoring just one run.
Earlier in the day, South Africa was bowled out for 153 runs in its second innings, adding 60 crucial runs to its overnight total of 93-7. Captain Temba Bavuma led from the front, scoring 55 not out off 136 balls—the only half-century of the test for either side—as he guided the Proteas to a challenging fourth-innings total.
Bavuma shared a vital 44-run partnership off 79 balls with Corbin Bosch for the eighth wicket, frustrating the Indian attack. Bosch contributed 25 off 37 balls, including two fours and one six, adding 24 more runs on Sunday. Bavuma brought up his 50 off 122 balls, with South Africa scoring 51-1 in the first hour of play.
Jasprit Bumrah broke the partnership by bowling Bosch in the 48th over. Mohammed Siraj then struck twice in the 54th over to end the Proteas’ innings.
The test has moved swiftly towards a conclusion, with a total of 15 wickets falling on day two. In the first innings, India posted 189 runs in reply to South Africa’s 159.
This match marks the first test at Kolkata’s historic Eden Gardens since 2019. South Africa has not won a test in India in 15 years and last clinched a test series on Indian soil in the 2000-01 season.
The second test is scheduled to begin in Guwahati on November 22.
