“I’m Nervous for Skinny Luka”: Former NBA Champ Debates Why He Prefers “Fat Luka Doncic” With Stunning Carmelo Anthony Parallels
One of the biggest stories in the NBA recently has been the body transformation of LA Lakers star Luka Doncic. Since entering the league, Doncic has faced criticism for gaining weight, with many labeling him as “not being in shape.” Despite the criticism, the star player consistently posted incredible numbers across the board and remained a formidable offensive threat.
However, the criticism became a motivating factor for Doncic to slim down and silence the haters. Fans got a glimpse of the slimmer “Skinny Luka” during the 2025 FIBA EuroBasket, where he showcased an aggressive and dynamic attacking style. Building on that momentum, Doncic started the 2025-26 NBA season strong, averaging an impressive 41.3 points per game.
While both fans and critics have embraced this leaner version of the Slovenian sensation, not everyone is fully confident. Former NBA star Iman Shumpert recently expressed some reservations about Doncic’s weight loss. Shumpert admitted feeling nervous about the slimmer Luka, explaining that without his previous bulk, the 6-foot-6 guard might struggle to overpower defenders.
Speaking during a recent episode of the podcast “No Limit!” where he was joined by former NBA player Metta World Peace, Shumpert shared his thoughts:
“I like Skinny Luka. I’m also nervous for Skinny Luka,” Shumpert said (1:22:24). “’Cause I like heavy Luka when he leans on you. Sometimes, Luka Doncic be in trouble. He has nothing there. He takes his body, puts it on you, you become unathletic. He backs up, and he gets that shot off. If Luka is not as heavy or just not as strong… maybe he got in shape and he stayed wiry strong.”
Shumpert also drew comparisons to his former teammate Carmelo Anthony, highlighting how Melo used his body to overpower defenders, especially when playing power forward.
“Melo is a different player when he had to play that low post four, when he was hitting you in the chest before he started his move, rather than playing on the perimeter and now playing a little more of a free game,” Shumpert explained.
Metta World Peace acknowledged these points but felt that it was time for Doncic to slim down and get in peak condition. While “fat Luka” was able to use his body to dominate defenders, World Peace believes Doncic’s current shape will better serve his long-term career.
Interestingly, World Peace also referenced LeBron James as a factor influencing Doncic’s need to stay in top shape. With LeBron now 40 years old, World Peace stated, “You can’t have LeBron and Luka. Luka got to be in tip-top shape.” Fans and analysts alike believe that as LeBron ages, Luka Doncic will increasingly take over as the Lakers’ franchise player, and being in prime physical condition is the first step toward solidifying that role.
In summary, Luka Doncic’s body transformation marks an important chapter in his career—balancing strength and agility while evolving into the main figure for the Lakers’ future. It remains to be seen how his slimmer frame will impact his playstyle, but early indications suggest that “Skinny Luka” is here to stay.
