High school boys basketball: Mustangs get second road win
Staff report TRINITY It was dream game for East Rowan head coach Trey Ledbetter on Friday. Four Mustangs in double figures. Nine made 3-pointers. Two quarters with 20-plus points. Offense is supposed to be East’s main issue, but those numbers will win a lot of games. East prevailed 66-49 on the road against Wheatmore. The Mustangs (2-1) have matched last year’s win total. East’s second victory didn’t come until February last season. “All wins are good wins and it does feel pretty great to be 2-1,” Ledbetter said. “All road wins are great wins, and our guys got two of those this week.” The Wheatmore player the Mustangs were worried about was shooter Avery Ivey. Ivey scored seven early, but didn’t score again after East went to a box-and-one defense. Logan Bradley had the defensive assignment on Ivey most of the time, and Jaden Eudy guarded Ivey some. East led 30-25 at halftime and achieved double-digit separation with a 21-point third quarter. “Playing a box-and-one defense can muck up your offense because it makes it harder to box out and rebound and it’s harder to get out in transition,” Ledbetter said. “But our offense was good tonight. We took care of the ball. We took good shots. We shot it well.” Brady Ailshie scored a career-best 19, including two 3-pointers in the third quarter. Bradley and Eudy, who also had a career high, scored 14 each. AB Brent scored 10. “I don’t have rebound stats yet, but AB probably had a double-double,” Ledbetter said. “If you count deflections, he probably had a triple-double. It’s nice that he scored 10, but it’s his shot-blocking, rebounding and defense that have been really critical for us.” Zayden Turner had another solid ball-handling game, got the ball to the shooters and scored seven. East won’t mind being on the road again on Tuesday at North Iredell. “I’m a demanding coach, but guys have bought in,” Ledbetter said. “Proud of the first week.” East Rowan 9 21 21 15 66 Wheatmore 13 12 13 11 49 EAST Ailshie 19, Eudy 14, Bradley 14, Brent 10, Turner 7, Lino 2.
