Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has praised the early conclusion of the India-EU free trade agreement and extended his support to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Greek PM called for the swift finalization of a mutually beneficial India-EU free trade pact, according to a report by news agency PTI.

The matter was discussed during a recent phone conversation between Prime Ministers Modi and Mitsotakis, where they also reviewed the growing bilateral ties between India and Greece, particularly in trade, investment, and defence sectors.

“Both leaders welcomed developments in bilateral relations across sectors such as trade, investment, technology, shipping, defence, security, connectivity, and people-to-people ties, and reaffirmed their commitment to further strengthen the India-Greece strategic partnership,” stated an official release from the Indian side. The statement also noted that Mitsotakis conveyed Greece’s best wishes for the success of the AI Impact Summit, which India will host in 2026.

Last week, the 13th round of negotiations between India and the European Union (EU) on the free trade agreement took place in New Delhi, reported PTI. The EU remains India’s largest trade partner, with bilateral trade in goods reaching USD 135 billion in the financial year 2023-24.

Following these negotiations, both parties have successfully concluded discussions on 11 chapters, covering key areas such as customs and trade facilitation, dispute settlement, digital trade, sustainable food systems, support for small and medium-sized enterprises, competition, subsidies, and capital movements.

In addition to trade matters, Prime Minister Mitsotakis extended warm birthday wishes to PM Modi on the occasion of his birthday on September 17. The Ministry of External Affairs shared that PM Modi expressed his heartfelt appreciation for the Greek Prime Minister’s thoughtful gesture.
