Election Commission starts process for proportional elections
**Kathmandu, December 7**: With 88 days left until the House of Representatives elections, preparations are intensifying across Nepal. The Election Commission has ramped up its activities and set the official date for the election: March 5, 2026.
As the election day approaches, political parties have also increased their internal preparations. In line with the election timeline, the Election Commission will today initiate the process related to the proportional representation (PR) electoral system. Political parties interested in participating through the PR system must submit their applications between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM today. The list of parties that have applied will be published on March 10.
Subsequently, parties that have applied for the PR system may submit their closed lists of candidates on Poush 13 and 14, again from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. According to Commission spokesperson Narayan Prasad Bhattarai, the final closed list of PR candidates will be made public on Magh 30. Of the total 275 members in the House of Representatives, 110 are elected through the proportional representation system.
Meanwhile, preparations for the first-past-the-post (FPTP) system are also underway. Candidate nomination papers for the FPTP system will be registered on Magh 6, with the candidate list published on the same day. Complaints regarding nominations can be filed on Magh 7, and the updated candidate list will be released on Magh 8. Candidates wishing to withdraw their names may do so on Magh 9. On the same day, the final list of candidates will be published, and election symbols will be distributed.
