Doug Martin, former Oakland Raiders and Boise State running back, dies at 36, family says

SAN FRANCISCO — Doug Martin, the former All-Pro running back for the Oakland Raiders and Tampa Bay Buccaneers, has died, his family said in a statement Sunday. He was 36.
“It is with great sadness to inform you all that Doug Martin passed away Saturday morning,” the family statement said, according to the Tampa Bay Times.
Just 5-foot-9, the Oakland, California-born star was known for his bruising running style, earning him the nickname the “Muscle Hamster.” Over his seven NFL seasons—all but one with the Buccaneers—Martin amassed 5,356 rushing yards and 30 touchdowns.
A former Boise State player, Martin was a first-round pick (No. 31 overall) by Tampa Bay in the 2012 NFL Draft. He immediately burst onto the scene, rushing for 1,454 yards and 11 touchdowns, while catching 49 passes for 472 yards and another score during his rookie season. His impressive performance earned him a Pro Bowl nod.
At the time, Martin recorded the third-most yards from scrimmage by a rookie in NFL history, trailing only Eric Dickerson (2,212 yards in 1983) and Edgerrin James (2,139 yards in 1999).
Martin’s best season came in 2015, his All-Pro year, when he rushed for 1,402 yards and six touchdowns. He also added 33 catches for 271 yards and another score that season.
He spent two more seasons with Tampa Bay before finishing his career in 2018 with the Oakland Raiders for one final season.
Doug Martin will be remembered for his toughness and dynamic play on the field, leaving a lasting impact on the teams and fans he inspired throughout his career.
