As the festive season approaches in India, consumer interest in diamonds is on the rise. Tehmasp Printer, MD and CEO of the International Gemmological Institute (IGI), has shared his insights on this growing trend and the increasing popularity of lab-grown diamonds among younger consumers.
### Market Shift: Lab-Grown Diamonds Gaining Popularity
Lab-grown diamonds are rapidly becoming the preferred choice for millennials and Gen Z shoppers who are new to luxury purchases. In the US, nearly half of bridal diamond purchases now involve lab-grown stones, which offer an “affordable luxury” without compromising on quality or physical properties.
While the US remains the largest market for these diamonds, India is quickly emerging as a key player. Currently, IGI polishes, cuts, and certifies around 80% of all lab-grown diamonds produced in India, underscoring the country’s growing stake in this segment.
### Expanding Accessibility Beyond Metro Cities
Tehmasp Printer highlighted that lab-grown diamond jewelry is increasingly accessible in India’s second- and third-tier cities, making diamond ownership attainable for a broader demographic. He also addressed concerns about negative perceptions related to lab-grown diamonds, assuring consumers that IGI’s independent and ISO-accredited certification guarantees transparency and authenticity. This empowers buyers to confidently choose between natural and lab-grown diamond options.
### Leveraging Technology for Trust and Efficiency
IGI is at the forefront of innovation in the diamond certification space, utilizing blockchain technology to provide secure provenance tracking throughout the supply chain. In addition, the institute is integrating artificial intelligence into its processes to boost efficiency, reduce turnaround times, and offer cost-effective solutions for consumers. This tech-savvy approach further enhances trust and transparency, reinforcing the appeal of lab-grown diamonds.
### Shifting Consumer Preferences in India
Though India’s market still predominantly favors traditional 22K gold jewelry, there is growing interest in lightweight gold pieces and lab-grown diamonds. These options provide more affordable alternatives without sacrificing design or quality.
During festive seasons, diamond demand continues to be strong, as consumers increasingly view lab-grown diamonds as a practical and attractive alternative to high gold prices.
