The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a cyclone warning for parts of Maharashtra, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall over the coming days. The alert covers key districts including Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg, with expected impacts from October 3 to October 7.
**Wind and Sea Conditions**
Winds along the northern Maharashtra coast are expected to reach speeds of 45-55 km/h, with gusts up to 65 km/h between October 3 and 5. The IMD has also warned of very rough to high sea conditions during this period, urging fishermen to avoid venturing into the sea for their safety.
**Rainfall and Flood Risks**
Cyclone Shakti’s outer bands are likely to cause heavy rainfall in various parts of Maharashtra, particularly in East Vidarbha and Marathwada regions. This increased rainfall heightens the risk of flooding, especially in low-lying areas of North Konkan.
**Government Alerts and Preparedness**
In response, the Maharashtra government has placed the state on high alert. District administrations have been instructed to activate disaster management protocols, including preparing evacuation plans for vulnerable coastal and low-lying communities. Public advisories urging caution during heavy rains and recommendations to avoid sea travel have been issued. Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, and Ratnagiri districts are currently on a yellow alert.
**Current Status of Cyclone Shakti**
As of Friday morning, Cyclone Shakti was located approximately 270 km southwest of Naliya in Gujarat and moving northwest at around 8 km/h. The cyclone is expected to intensify into a severe cyclonic storm by Saturday. Forecasts predict it will then track west-southwest towards the central Arabian Sea by October 5. While no landfall is anticipated, coastal areas should prepare for turbulent seas and heavy rainfall.
**IMD’s Rainfall Forecast for October**
The IMD has also forecasted above-normal rainfall for Maharashtra throughout October. Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director-General of Meteorology, noted that the state is likely to experience increased rainfall activities this month. With Cyclone Shakti developing in the Arabian Sea, authorities remain vigilant in monitoring weather conditions.
**Safety Advisory**
Residents in coastal regions are advised to avoid unnecessary travel during peak rainfall hours. Those living in flood-prone zones have been urged to follow evacuation orders if issued and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
Stay tuned for ongoing updates and stay safe during this period of adverse weather.
