Violence has spread to the tribal-dominated hill district of Khagrachari in Bangladesh. According to a statement from the country’s Ministry of Home Affairs on Sunday, three tribal people have been killed amid the unrest. Tensions remain high in the area, prompting the deployment of both army and police forces.

The Ministry of Home Affairs expressed deep sorrow over the incident, stating that in addition to the three hill people killed, 13 army personnel—including a major—and three policemen, including the Officer-in-Charge of Guimara Police Station, were injured during an attack by miscreants in Guimara Upazila of Khagrachari district.

The ministry assured the public that legal action would be taken against those involved in the incident following a thorough investigation. “No culprit will be spared,” the statement emphasized. Until then, the ministry has requested all concerned to remain patient and calm.

Local media reports indicate that tensions initially arose over the alleged rape of a tribal schoolgirl. In response, a group called Jummu Students organized a protest against the incident. Clashes subsequently broke out between the tribal community and Bengali residents.

In light of the escalating situation, the Bangladesh government has banned and blocked any rallies in the area to prevent further violence.
