College Football Program Fires Head Coach Amid Three-Game Losing Streak

The turnover rate for college football programs is relatively high before Week 12, and this season is no exception.

There are currently nine Power 4 schools (12 total in the FBS) searching for new head coaches in November, with more firings expected in the coming weeks. Programs like Penn State, LSU, Auburn, and Florida have already begun their search for new leaders, setting the stage for what could be one of the wildest coaching carousels in recent memory.

In related news, Jon Sumrall has sent a serious message regarding LSU’s coaching situation this past Sunday, adding to the drama surrounding coaching changes this season.

Meanwhile, on the FCS level, Samford University announced the firing of head coach Chris Hatcher. According to a statement from the university:

“We’ve enjoyed some incredible moments together with our success on the field and in the classroom. However, the results on the field the last few seasons have not met our expectations, and it’s time to go in a different direction. I wish Chris and his family all the best moving forward and know the Bulldog family is appreciative of all his hard work.”

Samford plans to name an interim head coach at a later date.

Chris Hatcher’s record with the Bulldogs stands at 62-59 over 11 seasons. This season, Samford started with a disappointing 1-9 overall record and 1-7 in the Southern Conference. The Bulldogs are currently on a three-game losing streak, including a 38-14 defeat to East Tennessee State last Saturday.

For his career, Hatcher holds an overall head coaching record of 182-110. His tenure includes coaching stints at Valdosta State, Georgia Southern, and Murray State. Notably, he led Samford to a conference title and a Division I quarterfinal appearance in 2022. Under his leadership, the Bulldogs made the postseason three times, and he won a Division II national championship with Valdosta State.

Samford still has two games remaining in the regular season. They will host Austin Peay in Week 12 before traveling to face No. 1 Texas A&M on November 22.
