COC Celebrates First Graduating Cohort of Clinical Lab Scientist Program
The first cohort of the College of the Canyons Clinical Lab Scientist (CLS) program celebrated their graduation on October 24 at a special ceremony held at the college’s University Center.
Launched in fall 2024, the CLS program is approved by the California Department of Public Health/Laboratory Field Services (CDPH/LFS) and prepares students for careers in clinical laboratories, industry, and biotechnology. After completing the 24.5-unit program, which includes extensive hands-on training and classroom instruction, twelve graduates earned a CLS certificate and are now eligible to sit for a CDPH/LFS-approved certification or board exam.
“We are very proud of our first graduating cohort,” said Dr. Hencelyn Chu, CLS program director and chair of the Medical Laboratory Technologies program. “These students are entering the workforce at a time when the demand for clinical laboratory scientists continues to grow. Their skills and dedication will play a vital role in supporting physicians and healthcare teams in the diagnosis and care of patients.”
The college’s CLS program is unique as it is the only one of its kind offered at a California community college. Similar programs are typically housed within four-year universities, making this an accessible and valuable opportunity for many students.
Clinical laboratory scientists play a critical role in the healthcare system by analyzing patient samples using moderate to high complexity testing to assist in disease diagnosis, treatment, and prevention. According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment for clinical laboratory technicians is projected to grow five percent from 2022 to 2032, which is faster than the average growth for all occupations.
The program’s curriculum combines classroom instruction with clinical training at CDPH/LFS-approved affiliate sites. This structure ensures that graduates gain the practical experience and technical skills needed to succeed in this growing and essential field.
