ChatGPT Now Supports Group Chats in Select Markets

OpenAI has begun testing a new group chat feature in ChatGPT that allows multiple users to collaborate within the same conversation. Unlike private one-on-one chats, group chats enable everyone in the group to ask questions, upload images and files, request information organization, and more.

“Group chats work much like your usual ChatGPT conversations, only now others can join in,” OpenAI explained. The AI has also been taught new social behaviors to better fit group settings. It follows the flow of the conversation and decides when to respond or stay quiet based on the context. Users can mention “ChatGPT” directly in a message when they want a response.

Currently, group chats are rolling out to mobile and web users in Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, and Taiwan. To start a group chat, users can tap the people icon at the top right corner of any chat. This creates a separate conversation where all participants’ personal ChatGPT memories are automatically disabled for privacy.

Group members can invite up to 20 participants using a shareable link. Rate limits are individualized for each user to ensure smooth interaction. OpenAI noted, “Group chats are just the beginning of ChatGPT becoming a shared space to collaborate and interact with others.”

Participants in group chats are required to create a profile that includes their name, username, and photo. Additionally, group chat managers have the ability to customize ChatGPT’s tone and response length to suit the group’s preferences.

As a safety measure, the chatbot will automatically enable safeguards whenever a user under the age of 18 joins a group chat. This helps ensure a safer experience for younger participants.

With this new feature, OpenAI aims to make ChatGPT a more collaborative and interactive tool for users around the world.
