Cattle Collapse on Friday Amid Trump Comments to Lower Beef Prices

Live cattle futures experienced a significant decline on Friday, dropping $3.70 to settle at $7.22 per pound following comments made by President Trump on Thursday. The December contract was down just 70 cents for the week.

Cash trade across the country settled in at $240-241. The Friday Fed Cattle Exchange recorded sales in the range of $240.50 to $242 on 166 of the 1,184 head offered, while bids on other lots ranged from $236 to $240.

Feeder cattle saw a sharper decline, with the nearby October contract falling $7.72. The rest of the feeder cattle board was locked limit down. November contracts dropped $4.20 for the week. Despite these declines, the CME Feeder Cattle Index increased by $1.41 to $376.51 as of October 16.

Both live and feeder cattle futures will have expanded daily limits on Monday, with increases to $10.75 and $13.75, respectively.

In a Thursday afternoon release, President Trump stated that the administration has a plan to bring down the price of beef. No specific details of the plan were provided, but the market reacted with a risk-off approach.

USDA Wholesale Boxed Beef prices rose in the Friday afternoon report, with the Choice/Select spread at $16.50. Choice boxed beef prices increased by 66 cents to $366.77, while Select boxes were up $1.34 to $350.27.

USDA federally inspected cattle slaughter for the week was estimated at 567,000 head. This figure is 20,000 head more than last week but 40,284 fewer than the same week last year.
