President Trump took to Truth Social on Saturday to urge the War Department to prepare for possible military action if the Nigerian government fails to stop the slaughter of Christians.

He stated, “If the Nigerian Government continues to allow the killing of Christians, the U.S.A. will immediately stop all aid and assistance to Nigeria, and may very well go into that now disgraced country, ‘guns-a-blazing,’ to completely wipe out the Islamic Terrorists who are committing these horrible atrocities. I am hereby instructing our Department of War to prepare for possible action. If we attack, it will be fast, vicious, and sweet, just like the terrorist thugs attack our CHERISHED Christians! WARNING: THE NIGERIAN GOVERNMENT BETTER MOVE FAST! Things are moving fast.”

The challenge of stopping the killing of Christians in Nigeria is complex. While some perpetrators are Islamists from Boko Haram, many are ordinary extremists who simply want to kill Christians and seize their property. The Nigerian government likely lacks sufficient control over its territory to protect Christians in Muslim-majority areas without risking the emergence of Islamist insurgencies.

Compounding the issue, President Joe Biden closed the last U.S. military base in Africa—Agadez, Niger—in August 2024. The two bases the U.S. maintained in Niger had been focal points for surveillance and antiterrorism operations across Sub-Saharan Africa. Without these strategic bases, conducting any meaningful direct action in Nigeria will be significantly more difficult.
