**Betty Jean Jones (1932 – 2025)**
Betty Jean Jones was born on November 1, 1932, and raised in Sidney, Ohio. She was the middle of three daughters born to Esther and Walter Steinkemper. Betty attended Kent State University, where she met the handsome John Paul Jones. They married in 1952, beginning a lifelong partnership.
As a military wife, Betty supported John through his career until he joined the U.S. Secret Service, where he served by guarding U.S. Presidents. While John protected the nation, Betty took care of their four children, coordinating moves and setting up homes in eight cities across the country. They shared 51 years of marriage before John’s passing in 2004.
After raising her family, Betty completed her undergraduate degree at the University of New Mexico and earned a Master’s Degree in Special Education. She dedicated her career to teaching at Osuna Elementary School and Carrie Tingley Hospital, retiring in 1993.
Betty was deeply involved in her community. She served as Treasurer, Vice President, and President of the Tanoan Neighborhood Association, showing her love for her neighborhood and friends. She was an active member of the Delta Zeta Sorority, Chatty Chicks, and the Prime Time Gang. Betty was also a long-time member of St. John’s United Methodist Church and participated in the UMC Women’s group, Naomi Circle.
She enjoyed Florida beach vacations with family, reading, writing, genealogy, crossword puzzles, and spending time with her dogs. Betty loved international travel and explored eight countries. After her husband’s passing, she shared a decade with her partner, Bill Bordone.
Betty was preceded in death by her son, John Paul Jones Jr., a Dallas Police Officer. She is survived by her three daughters: Lisa Ashcraft (Phillip), Wendy Jones-Graham (Kevin), and Betsy Argeanas (Alex). Betty was a proud grandmother to Katie, Dana, Emily, John, Cooper, and Sianna, and a great-grandmother to Benjamin, Isabel, and Orion.
She passed away peacefully on September 21, 2025, surrounded by family in Albuquerque, New Mexico, at the age of 92. Betty was known for her kindness, sunny, positive attitude, and her ability to see the silver lining in every situation. She will be greatly missed.
The family wishes to thank the caring staff and nurses at Neveah Hospice and the caregivers at Lifespire for their support.
