A man allegedly drove a car into worshippers and stabbed victims outside a Manchester synagogue Thursday morning, killing two people and seriously injuring three others as Jews observed Yom Kippur, officials reported.

Police shot and killed the suspect outside Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation Synagogue in Crumpsall, a north Manchester neighborhood with a large Jewish population. Officers responded to the scene at 9:31 a.m. local time, NBC News reported.

Greater Manchester Police said bomb disposal teams examined suspicious items found on the suspect’s body before confirming his death. A congregant prevented the attacker from entering the synagogue, police added.

“We are grateful to the member of the public whose quick response to what they witnessed allowed our swift action, and as a result, the offender was prevented from entering the synagogue,” a police spokesperson said in a news release.

Video verified by NBC shows officers pointing guns at a man on the ground outside the synagogue. The man attempts to stand before an officer fires one shot. The footage also shows another man wearing a yarmulke lying in blood nearby, according to the outlet.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer left a European summit in Copenhagen to chair an emergency response meeting in London. “I’m already able to say that additional police assets are being deployed to synagogues across the country, and we will do everything to keep our Jewish community safe,” Starmer told reporters.

London’s Israeli Embassy called the attack “abhorrent and deeply distressing.” Graham Stringer, the local member of Parliament, described it as “a dreadful attack designed to damage the Jewish community and damage inter-faith and inter-community relationships.”

Police kept worshippers inside the synagogue immediately after the attack but later allowed them to leave.
