The Assam government has formally requested the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) to invoke the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) with Singapore in connection with the recent death of renowned singer Zubeen Garg, aged 52.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced this development on Monday, emphasizing that invoking the treaty would ensure full cooperation from Singaporean authorities. According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the MLAT “facilitates cooperation between the two countries in criminal investigations and proceedings.”

### Assam CM’s Statement

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Sarma wrote, “The Government of Assam has submitted a formal request to the Ministry of Home Affairs to invoke the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) with Singapore in connection with the unfortunate demise of our beloved Zubeen Garg. Once invoked, this will ensure full cooperation from Singaporean authorities, giving us access to case details and assistance in extradition if necessary, to secure justice.”

Currently, a Special Investigation Team (SIT) is probing the case.

### Investigation Efforts and Next Steps

Following the MHA’s invocation of the treaty, a special team from Assam will be dispatched to Singapore. This team will collaborate with local authorities to examine the case evidence thoroughly and ensure that every legal avenue is pursued diligently.

This move comes amid growing public demand for a transparent and comprehensive investigation into Garg’s death—an event that has deeply affected millions of fans across Assam and the Northeast region.

### Family’s Plea for Justice

Zubeen Garg passed away in Singapore due to drowning on September 19. His wife, Garima Saikia Garg, has called for a meticulous inquiry into the circumstances surrounding his death. She raised questions about why those present with him on the yacht did not come to his aid, especially considering his known health condition and the possibility of an epileptic seizure.

“I want justice! I want a proper inquiry and answers to all our questions,” she asserted in remarks to reporters following the 11th-day rituals held for her late husband in Guwahati.

The investigation continues as Assam seeks to uncover the full truth behind the tragic loss of the beloved singer.
