Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the first phase of the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) on Wednesday, marking a significant milestone in India’s aviation sector. Developed at a cost of ₹19,650 crore, NMIA stands as the country’s largest greenfield airport project. It has been constructed under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model by the Adani Group in collaboration with the City Industrial Development Corporation.
**Boosting Connectivity and Reducing Congestion**
The new airport is expected to alleviate congestion at Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), providing much-needed relief to one of India’s busiest aviation hubs. PM Modi highlighted NMIA’s potential to become a major connectivity hub in Asia.
He also emphasized the airport’s role in economic development, particularly for Maharashtra’s farmers. “Navi Mumbai International Airport is a project that reflects ‘Viksit Bharat’. With this new airport, farmers in Maharashtra will be connected to the markets of the Middle East and Europe,” said the Prime Minister during the inauguration.
**Technological Advancements in Phase One**
The first phase of NMIA covers 1,160 hectares and is designed to handle 20 million passengers annually. It features one terminal building and a single runway, equipped with state-of-the-art technology to enhance passenger experience and operational efficiency.
Key features include:
– 5G connectivity across the airport grounds
– Internet of Things (IoT) sensors for real-time monitoring
– Automated baggage handling systems
– Contactless passenger processing via Digi Yatra
These innovations aim to make travel seamless and convenient for all passengers.
**Fully Automated Cargo Facilities**
NMIA also boasts a fully automated cargo facility designed for high efficiency. The cargo area includes digital consignment tracking and climate-controlled zones, ensuring safe transport of medicines, perishables, and other sensitive goods.
**Commercial Operations and Flight Services**
The airport is slated to commence commercial operations by December 2025. Ticket sales are expected to open by the end of October, with airlines such as IndiGo, Akasa Air, and Air India Express ready to operate flights from NMIA.
**An “Anxiety-Free” Airport Experience**
Arun Bansal, CEO of Adani Airports Holdings Limited (AAHL), which manages NMIA, described the airport as “anxiety-free” thanks to its digital features. These innovations reduce wait times and enhance comfort at every stage of the passenger journey.
For instance, travelers will receive real-time notifications on their phones, such as updates about their baggage carousel position — for example, “your bag is number 20 on the carousel” — improving transparency and reducing stress.
The Adani Group plans to develop NMIA in five phases in partnership with the City Industrial Development Corporation, with the vision of creating a world-class airport that sets new standards for connectivity and passenger comfort in India.
