On Wednesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the first phase of the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA), marking a significant milestone in India’s aviation sector. Developed at a cost of ₹19,650 crore, NMIA is the country’s largest greenfield airport project and was built under a Public Private Partnership (PPP) model by the Adani Group in collaboration with the City Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO).

**Boosting Connectivity and Reducing Congestion**

The new airport is set to ease the heavy traffic load on Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA). Speaking at the inauguration, PM Modi highlighted NMIA’s role as a major connectivity hub in Asia, emphasising its potential to create economic opportunities. He noted, “Navi Mumbai International Airport is a project that reflects ‘Viksit Bharat.’ With this new airport, farmers in Maharashtra will be connected to the markets of the Middle East and Europe.”

**State-of-the-Art Technology in Phase One**

The first phase of the NMIA covers 1,160 hectares and is designed to handle 20 million passengers annually. It features a single runway and one terminal building equipped with cutting-edge technology to enhance passenger experience. These include 5G connectivity, IoT sensors for real-time monitoring, automated baggage handling systems, and contactless processing through Digi Yatra, ensuring smooth and convenient travel.

**Fully Automated Cargo Facilities**

Besides passenger services, NMIA boasts a fully automated cargo facility. With digital consignment tracking and climate-controlled storage areas, the airport is well-equipped to handle sensitive goods like medicines and perishables efficiently.

**An “Anxiety-Free” Airport Experience**

Arun Bansal, CEO of Adani Airports Holdings Limited (AAHL), which manages NMIA, described the airport as “anxiety-free” due to its advanced digital features that minimize wait times and improve comfort. He shared an example, stating, “You will be able to get a message on your phone telling you, for example, that your bag is number 20 on the carousel,” highlighting the personalized updates passengers can expect.

**Commercial Operations and Future Plans**

The airport is projected to commence commercial flights by December 2025, with ticket sales starting by the end of October. Airlines such as IndiGo, Akasa Air, and Air India Express are poised to begin operations. NMIA is being developed in five phases, with ongoing collaboration between the Adani Group and CIDCO, promising to transform the region’s air travel landscape in the coming years.
