Man shot, killed by CPD in Humboldt Park was in vehicle wanted in Eisenhower shooting: COPA
CHICAGO (WLS) — The Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA) reported that the man shot and killed by Chicago police on Monday was in a vehicle wanted in connection with a shooting on the Eisenhower Expressway earlier that day.
No injuries were reported in the earlier shooting, which caused traffic disruptions during the afternoon rush hour.
According to COPA, police were alerted to a white Mercedes in the Humboldt Park neighborhood, specifically in the 800-block of North Homan Avenue. Around 5:30 p.m., an unmarked police vehicle attempted to engage the driver. The car drove away, striking a pedestrian who was in a crosswalk.
Chicago Police Department (CPD) officers followed the vehicle through an alley, where it subsequently crashed into a CTA bus. The driver also collided with an unmarked CPD squad car during the pursuit.
Witness video shared with ABC7 Chicago shows officers with guns drawn as the car reversed. While driving toward the bus, an officer discharged their weapon at the vehicle.
The driver was shot and transported to a hospital, where he later died. His identity has not yet been released.
Two officers involved in the incident were also taken to the hospital and are reported to be in good condition. A weapon was recovered at the scene, according to COPA.
Anyone with information or video footage related to this shooting is urged to contact COPA at 312-746-3609 or visit ChicagoCOPA.org.
