**Race for Illinois State Comptroller Heats Up Ahead of Primary Election**

CHICAGO (WLS) — With less than two weeks remaining until the Illinois primary election, ABC7 takes a closer look at the race for state comptroller. Incumbent Susana Mendoza is not seeking reelection, opening the door for four Democratic women vying to become Illinois’ next comptroller.

Though often overlooked, the comptroller’s office plays a crucial role in the state, especially during a time when the Trump administration has cut billions in funding to Illinois. According to Illinois state Rep. Margaret Croke, “The comptroller’s office pays the checks. And also, it’s that last line of financial oversight, and all the local government audits, they go to the comptrollers. The comptroller is the person who is the last person who can raise the red flag if something is off.”

Governor J.B. Pritzker has endorsed Croke, a Chicago resident who highlights her experience serving in the Illinois House and her work with the Department of Commerce as qualifications for the role. Croke currently leads in fundraising, though Illinois state Sen. Karina Villa closely trails her.

Villa has criticized Croke’s campaign donations, pointing out that some come from super PACs and Republicans. “I’m not on the defense about where I’m getting my money. I get the money from the unions and from everyday people who want a transparent government,” Villa said.

Susana Mendoza has held the comptroller’s office since 2016 and is endorsing Lake County Treasurer Holly Kim as her successor. Mendoza credits her tenure with turning Illinois’ fiscal situation around after the administration of former Governor Bruce Rauner, and believes Kim will continue that progress.

Kim emphasizes her readiness to lead. “From day one to Election Day, we’ve been running on my experience, even the fact that on day one, I can do the job,” she said.

Another candidate, Illinois state Rep. Stephanie Kifowit from Oswego, points to her extensive experience as a U.S. Marine veteran, former registered financial advisor, and 20 years serving in Springfield handling government finance. She said, “I know the employees of the controller’s office. I know the modernization act that’s already in place, $53 million that individuals appreciate having somebody with knowledge and experience in such a critical role.”

As the Illinois primary approaches, voters will decide which of these four qualified Democrats will be next to oversee one of the state’s most vital financial positions.
