Lions eliminated from playoff contention with loss to Vikings
The Detroit Lions entered the season as one of the co-favorites to represent the NFC in the Super Bowl. However, their postseason hopes were dashed on Christmas Day following a 23-10 defeat to the Minnesota Vikings.
At the start of the day, the Lions still held an outside chance to overtake the Green Bay Packers. To do so, Detroit needed to beat both the Vikings and the Chicago Bears in their season finale, while Green Bay had to lose their final two games against the Baltimore Ravens and the Vikings. Unfortunately for the Lions, turnovers proved to be their undoing in this crucial matchup.
Detroit gave the ball away six times during the game. Quarterback Jared Goff threw two interceptions and lost three fumbles, while running back Jahmyr Gibbs also lost a fumble. This was a stark contrast to the first 15 games of the season, where the Lions had only turned the ball over eight times total. In this game, they struggled to contain a very aggressive Vikings defense.
Defensive standouts for Minnesota included Harrison Smith and Byron Murphy, who each intercepted passes in the third quarter. Additionally, Andrew Van Ginkel recovered two fumbles, with Jalen Redmond and Murphy recovering one fumble apiece. These forced turnovers played a pivotal role in Minnesota’s victory.
With the win, the Vikings improved to 8-8, escaping the NFC North cellar and moving into third place ahead of the Lions, who also stand at 8-8. Minnesota holds the tiebreaker advantage by sweeping the season series against Detroit.
Offensively, the Vikings faced challenges under backup quarterback Max Brosmer. Brosmer completed 9 of 16 passes for just 51 yards and was sacked seven times, losing 48 yards. Despite struggling offensively and finishing with only three net passing yards, the Vikings capitalized on Detroit’s mistakes.
Minnesota converted an early first-quarter fumble into a 1-yard touchdown run by Aaron Jones, capping off a 5-play, 16-yard drive. Later, a spectacular 65-yard touchdown on an end-around run by speedy wide receiver Jordan Addison in the fourth quarter extended the Vikings’ lead to 10 points, giving them control of the game with 3:43 remaining.
Ultimately, the Lions’ six turnovers proved costly, allowing the Vikings to secure a crucial victory and keep their playoff hopes alive.
