Grady County BOE names Dr. Jamie Horne Interim Superintendent
CAIRO The Grady County Board of Education appointed Human Resources Director Dr. Jamie Horne as Interim Superintendent at its board meeting on Thursday. The board stated Horne was the ideal candidate to continue the vision the district had already established, as well as the vision of the late Dr. Eric McFee, who passed away in early November. “We wanted to use someone who was already aware of our vision to keep us moving on the path that we’re moving because we’ve got great things going,” Vice Chair Derrick Majors said. “We felt Dr. Horne may have been the correct choice for that.” Majors said the board chose not to select anyone who might be interested in applying for the permanent position, as a matter of maintaining transparency. Chief Operations Officer Michael Best will continue as the point of contact for the Grady County School System until Horne’s appointment goes into effect on Dec. 1, 2025. The school district followed up the appointment with a Facebook post, where they stated that they “sought someone who not only shares the district’s long-term vision but can also provide steady, uninterrupted guidance during this transition. In addition to the appointment, updates were given on a School Resource Officer Contract signed in October with the Grady County Sheriff’s Office. There was some fine-tuning needed regarding the transfer of equipment the updated contract was reported ready to sign by the board. There was also a facilities update from Maintenance Director Dave Mitchell, who said that he and Dr. McFee were right in the middle of drawing up the five-year facilities plan before his passing. Mitchell said he knew what McFee’s vision was and advised the other board members that he was waiting on their input as well. A facility plan is state-required, and it lays out the goals for the future regarding facilities in a school district.
