Large waterspout spotted off West Auckland, New Zealand coast amid stormy weather
A large waterspout resembling a tornado was spotted off the coast of West Auckland this morning.
Local resident Robert Waddell said he saw the spout about 1 km off the coast of Muriwai Beach. The waterspout stretched around 400 meters into the air and had a large base approximately 100 meters in diameter.
“It was this huge white column,” Waddell described. “It was heading off towards the Helensville area, but only over the sea, obviously. And it just kept on going till it hit the beach.”
Despite the impressive sight, he said he was not nervous about standing out and photographing the phenomenon since it was moving in the opposite direction.
“I’ve never seen one before. It was quite spectacular,” he added.
