Apple’s Foldable iPhone Set To Launch In 2026, Will Resemble Two iPhone Airs Side-By-Side

Apple is preparing to enter the foldable smartphone market next year, and Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has shared initial details about the design of the device. According to Gurman, the upcoming foldable iPhone—expected to launch alongside the iPhone 18 series in fall 2026—will take inspiration from the iPhone Air as a baseline for its design.

### A Sleek, Titanium Foldable iPhone

Gurman describes the highly anticipated foldable iPhone as essentially “two titanium iPhone Airs side-by-side.” This design approach emphasizes sleekness over bulk, making the device “super thin and a design achievement,” according to Gurman’s latest Bloomberg newsletter.

This revelation dispels earlier concerns that Apple’s first foldable might be thick and unwieldy. Instead, the iPhone Fold is positioned to compete directly with Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 7, currently the thinnest foldable phone on the market, measuring just 4.2mm when unfolded. Apple’s choice of a titanium chassis not only brings durability but is also crucial for withstanding the stress placed on the hinge mechanism and folding display during daily use.

### Manufacturing and Pricing Insights

Regarding production, Gurman notes that Apple may conduct “at least” some manufacturing of the iPhone Fold in China, which contrasts with earlier reports suggesting production might take place in India. This mixed manufacturing strategy could involve producing intricate components in China, with assembly or other processes happening elsewhere.

On the pricing front, the foldable iPhone is expected to be a premium device. Gurman estimates it will cost around $2,000 (approximately Rs. 1,76,000) at launch, making it Apple’s most expensive standard iPhone model to date. This price reflects both the advanced foldable display technology and the use of high-end materials like titanium.

### Part of Apple’s Broader iPhone Redesign Strategy

The foldable iPhone is a key element in Apple’s ambitious three-year iPhone redesign plan, which started with the iPhone 17 series. The plan is set to culminate by 2027 with what some reports suggest will be a completely reimagined “iPhone 20” design, featuring innovations such as glass construction.

The iPhone Air has played a significant role in this broader strategy. All the engineering efforts that went into making the iPhone Air exceptionally thin are now being applied to develop Apple’s first foldable device, maintaining the same ethos of sleekness and premium design.

Apple’s entry into the foldable market may well redefine expectations for what these devices can be—combining cutting-edge materials, thoughtful engineering, and a design philosophy centered on elegance and usability. We’ll be keeping a close eye on further updates as the launch of the foldable iPhone draws nearer.
