Shawn Levy Gives Disappointing Update On “Real Steel” Disney+ Series
Back in 2022, it was revealed that Disney’s 20th Television and 21 Laps were developing a series adaptation of *Real Steel* for Disney+. The show was set in the not-so-distant future, where boxing has gone high-tech — featuring 2,000-pound, 8-foot-tall steel robots taking over the ring.
Reports indicated that Robert Zemeckis, Jack Rapke, Jacqueline Levine, Susan Montford, and Don Murphy were attached to the project, alongside Shawn Levy. Levy has an extensive history with Disney, having worked on projects like *Free Guy*, *Deadpool & Wolverine*, and the upcoming *Star Wars: Starfighter* film.
It has been a couple of years since the last update about the *Real Steel* Disney+ series. However, a recent interview with Shawn Levy, conducted to promote the final season of Netflix’s *Stranger Things*, shed some light on the show’s status. Levy stated:
> “I have to credit you, Frosty, because you are tenacious. I feel like we’re going to be old men, and you’re still going to be asking me about *Real Steel*, which I love you for. The status is unclear, and boy, I wish that I felt it was more likely to happen than I’m currently feeling it is.”
The original *Real Steel* film was released in 2011 by Disney’s Touchstone label and grossed $300 million at the box office. It starred Hugh Jackman, Dakota Goyo, Evangeline Lilly, and Anthony Mackie. Unfortunately, the original movie is not currently available to stream on Disney+.
**Roger’s Take:**
As with many projects that entered development during the pandemic, it looks like the *Real Steel* series for Disney+ may not come to fruition. This is likely due to several factors. Many projects greenlit under Bob Chapek’s leadership at Disney appear to have been quietly cancelled or shelved. Additionally, Disney+ has been significantly reducing both the number and budget of its original productions, and a high-tech series like *Real Steel* would likely be costly to produce.
Furthermore, Shawn Levy has been busy with major franchises like *Stranger Things*, Marvel, and *Star Wars*, which may have limited his availability to focus on this project.
